Modelling and Controlling Hydropower Plants

Abstract

Starting with a historical review of methods for controlling hydropower plant, the evolution of governors from early mechanical devices to modern electronic controllers is described. A short section samples some of the more advanced proposals for hydropower control that have emerged over the last 20 years or so. The requirements for frequency and load (power) control are discussed and the structure and action of a generic controller is described. The chapter concludes with a brief review of relevant IEEE industrial standards.
