Abstract

Technology involves risk . But what is technology risk? The literature on risk is broad and involves a vast spectrum of disciplines. It is difficult even to draw a multidisciplinary account of risk . Although different risk accounts might initially seem to be controversial or contradicting each other, it is useful to draw similarities or relationships between them. This supports cross-fertilisation between scientific and practitioner communities, who share an interest in understanding risk in technology and its evolution , or technology innovation . The problem, on the one hand, is a communication one—different disciplines need to inform each other. On the other hand, it requires a shift from multidisciplinary accounts to an interdisciplinary understanding of technology risk . Our socio-technical studies highlight and discuss various research results that contribute towards an interdisciplinary account of emerging technological risk .
