Abstract
This chapter provides background information and describes the tools that are available to the designer of multivariable flight control laws. The fundamentals of aircraft dynamics are reviewed, the basics of flying qualities requirements are discussed, uncertainty models and analysis techniques are presented, and compensator design and order reduction methods are addressed. Because of the wide range of technologies that are considered, it is impossible to present complete details on all of these areas within a reasonable volume. This chapter should therefore be treated as a overview or as a springboard into a more detailed examination of each topic. A list of references is given to facilitate such an effort.
