Abstract
In response to the development of new technologies and the competitive pressures of a global economy, the nature of manufacturing is changing. Companies once organized along hierarchical lines, using traditional equipment to produce standardized products for local markets, are being replaced by flexible organizations and company networks employing advanced, reconfigurable technologies to produce quality products in order to meet specific customer requirements in international markets. Technology is advancing so rapidly that many manufacturers are already operating in an environment of continuous, and often dramatic, change.
