Abstract

The formation of ocular dominance (OD) columns is an often investigated example for activity dependent emergence of ordered maps in the brain. Many models have been developed to explain this self-organization process (von der Malsburg, 1979; Swindale, 1980; Miller et al, 1989; Goodhill, 1993). Two more recent models are based on Kohonen’s Self-Organizing Feature Map algorithm (SOFM, Obermayer et al. 1992), and on the elastic net algorithm (Goodhill and Willshaw 1990).
