Industrial Relevance of Device Modelling
In the industrial environment the need to get things “right first time” has never been greater than it is today. A single mistake in the design of of a circuit mask set, or the incorrect specification of an epitaxial growth sequence can cost tens of thousands of pounds in process and engineering costs and many months of delay. In the development phase of a process, each process run is very expensive and each change to a process may involve new mask designs, procurement of fresh epitaxial material and, in extreme cases, investment in expensive new processing equipment. Getting the design wrong in manufacture and having to develop processes by multiple trials alone adds up to high costs and unacceptable delays. Device modelling offers the opportunity to cut out some process iterations, understand what the critical design areas are and reduce development times and costs.
