Abstract
All the results so far in this book, and most of the results available in the literature on the minimization of the effects of Finite Word Length (FWL) errors — due to FWL encoding and/or to arithmetic roundoff — have been for applications in filter design or, more recently, in controller design. Although a few other approaches are possible (as we have seen in Section 3.9), for the most part these analyses lead to the formulation and the solution of optimal state space design problems, in which the search is performed over the set of all equivalent (i e similar) state space realizations of a filter or a controller.
