Abstract
The Technical Inspection Associations “TÜV” in Germany can look back on more than 100 years of operation as inspection and consultancy organisations. There are now twelve TÜV distributed around the country that work independently of one another. They are totally committed to impartiality and are independent of pressure groups. They operate on a nonprofit basis.
Their activities cover a wide range of technical fields encompassing safety, energy, traffic and ecology. The structure of the TÜVs will be presented in detail.
In Germany, safety critical applications must be certified by independent assessors before they are licensed by the authorities. The certification, which is conducted according to state of the art principles, is performed almost exclusively by the TÜV’s.
The procedures for the certification of safety critical systems will be described and basic rules presented.
