Abstract
Software development as an engineering process can usefully draw upon the results of studies in design theory from general engineering research. From an engineering perspective, the activity of design is itself amenable to being designed (Whitney 1990). Thus, there is the potential to develop theories of design with the possibility of radically changing the nature of existing design practice.
