Abstract
Flow cytometers first became available commercially around 1970, and early studies of algal cultures were carried out by Paau et al. (1978), Price et al. (1978) and Trask et al. (1982). A workshop report by Yentsch et al. (1983b) drew attention to the remarkable power of flow cytometry for aquatic particle analysis, and this was followed by the rapid adoption of the technique in oceanographic research. A special volume of Cytometry (Yentsch and Horan 1989) has been devoted to this topic, and the proceedings of a lively NATO Advanced Study Institute have recently been published (Demers 1992).
