Neurological Complications of HIV Infection: Clinical Aspects

  • Chapter
The Neuropathology of HIV Infection

Abstract

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), due to infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), produces clinical effects through patients’ susceptibility to opportunistic infections and the development of tumours, such as lymphomas. It soon became clear that the nervous system was frequently involved (Snider et al, 1983). Severe and often fatal infections of the nervous system were experienced by those with immunodeficiency, and in 10 per cent of cases neurological problems were the first signs of the development of AIDS. As the epidemic due to HIV infection has grown, so too has the list of neurological manifestations (McArthur, 1987; Harrison and McAllister, 1991). The number of patients with AIDS-related neurological problems, as seen for example at the University of California group of hospitals in San Francisco, is doubling every year (Levy and Bredesen, 1988). To date (April 1991) there have been some 4228 cases of AIDS in the UK, of whom 50 per cent are dead.
