Abstract

The discovery of HIV as the etiologic agent of AIDS has already been described in this book. Suffice it to say that by the middle of 1984 it was accepted that a third human retrovirus had been isolated, which was associated with AIDS. While some still doubt that HIV causes AIDS (Duesberg, 1988), it would appear that much of the immunosuppression of AIDS can be attributed directly to HIV infection (Blattner et al, 1988).
