Abstract
In making a preoperative assessment, information from the history and examination should be supported by objective measurements whenever possible. Goniometry, radiographs, photo-graphy and Odstock wire tracings each have value. Only with clear preoperative records can surgical results be evaluated. If the patient has waited long, he or she should be reassessed immediately before surgery, if necessary by a preadmission visit to the clinic or day ward. Skin ulcers may have appeared, disease may have progressed requiring more extensive surgery or the pain may no longer be coming from the joint chosen for surgery. The last mentioned may not be evident to the patient.
