Abstract
Elbow function, especially in the intermediate range of movement, is important for indepen-dence. Activities such as eating, dressing and perineal toilet depend upon a range of movement, both elbow flexion and extension as well as forearm rotation. Stability is important for the elbow becomes a weight-bearing joint when crutches are used. Thus, in considering surgical priorities, it may be necessary to solve an elbow problem in advance of lower limb surgery to enable the patient to use walking aids. Conversely, if an elbow prosthesis is to be inserted, the demands imposed on it by lower limb problems need to be considered.
