Abstract

Radiographic evidence of glenohumeral arthritis was present in 67.5% of patients reported by Ennevaara (1967) and in 83% by Petersson (1986). The shoulder is unusually the site of severe destruction and then almost exclusively when there is severe destruction of other joints. Destruction tends to appear late in the shoulder. This may explain why most surgeons have been hesitant in the past to operate on rheumatoid shoulders.
