The Aetiology and Management of Recurrent Miscarriage

  • Chapter
Spontaneous Abortion

Abstract

The term “recurrent miscarriage” implies that repeated episodes of early pregnancy loss have a unique cause but this need not be so. A single underlying cause is likely in a proportion of women only, since sporadic miscarriage is the commonest complication of pregnancy and approximately 25% of all women who become pregnant will experience one or more pregnancy losses (Warburton and Fraser 1964). The distinction between recurrent abortions from a single persisting cause and repeated abortions from different causes is difficult. However, there do seem to be factors distinguishing some women with repeated abortion from others, suggesting that in addition to random causes, in a proportion of cases specific components are involved and that “recurrent miscarriage” is a distinct clinical entity.
