Abstract

Lamb provided a useful general reference to congenital abnormalities of the upper limb. The managenent of the radial club hand is summarised. The deformity is ugly and progresses during growth. Splinting the wrist straight from an early age is advisable. If there is active elbow flexion to 90°, the wrist deformity should be corrected. The most satisfactory operation is centralisation of the carpus over the lower end of the ulna. It is unlikely that most surgeons will have much personal exposure to or experience in the management of these conditions and therefore the authors have not studied references in depth. Lamb stressed the need for special clinics and skills for the management of these complex problems.
