Abstract

In 1972, Blockey discussed the use of antibiotics in the management of 141 cases of acute osteomyelitis in Glasgow. The opinion was maintained that the correct treatment was rest and antibiotics. Operation was indicated only if pus was detected clinically. The most effective antibiotic combination was fusidic acid and erythromycin. The flora causing the disease was less sensitive to benzylpenicillin than 10 years ago and resistance may develop to methicillin and cloxacillin. Duration of treatment should be 3 weeks.
