Abstract
Recent anxieties about the risks of carrying out prostate surgery on elderly and unfit patients has generated considerable interest in a variety of recently developed urethral devices for holding open mechanically the prostatic urethra thereby avoiding the need for prostate surgery. Problems caused by leaving foreign material in the urinary tract are well recognised. Catheters, indwelling stents of any type and sutures will inevitably become infected and encrust with phosphatic deposits when left in contact with urine. Newer materials will reduce these problems but have failed to prevent them completely. Once infection or encrustation have occurred it is always necessary to remove the implanted material to deal with the problem satisfactorily. These difficulties have meant that implanted material in the lower urinary tract can only be used as a temporary measure to drain urine or to relieve obstruction whilst awaiting more definitive treatment.
