Abstract
An operation can only be considered “routine” when the patient has recovered from surgery and been relieved of the symptoms. A complication is any adverse event which prevents or delays this outcome. After transurethral prostatectomy (TURP) 75% of patients satisfy these criteria at 1 year post-operatively (Neal et al. 1989). With patients’ expectations rising, the explosion of litigation, limited availability of medical resources, and the advent of competition in hospital practice, the prevention of complications will have an increased priority in surgical decision making.
Any operation carries with it the risk of complications.
