Tractable Rationality at the Knowledge Level

  • Conference paper
AISB91

Abstract

The notion of knowledge level is an attempt to resolve some confusions in the usage of the terms “representation” and “knowledge” in Artificial Intelligence. The value of the idea will be ultimately determined by the extent in which it can be turned into a practically useful tool for the analysis, description, specification and construction of (software) systems, and of knowledge based systems in particular. In this note an interpretation of Newell’s original notion of knowledge level and some new ideas are put together to indicate a possible road toward this goal. The discussion centers around two closely related issues namely a reinterpretation of the principle of rationality, and the knowledge level representation of problem solving methods, competence and control. Other aspects of intelligence like behavior, memory and learning are not ignored but beyond the scope of the paper and the panel.
