Abstract

Loosening is generally recognized as one major complication in arthroplasty of the knee (Cameron and Hunter 1982; Thornhill . 1982; Goldberg . 1988; Rand and Coventry 1988). From an incidence of up to 10% in the 1970s (Skolnick . 1976; Freeman . 1978; Lacey 1978) the incidence has decreased significantly in more recent reports (Insall . 1983; Insall and Kelly 1986). During the last decade, a sub-group of loosening, i.e. subsidence of the tibial component, has emerged as a major cause of failure of knee replacements.
