Summary

The “Institut für Steuerungstechnik der Werkzeugmaschinen und Fertigungseinsichuungen” of the University of Stuttgart (ISW) has provided an experimental pilot facility, where the benefits of open systems communications are demonstrated. The pilot uses devices (minicomputers, PC’s and controllers) from each participating vendor within the CNMA project and by this way represents a real multivendor CIM environment. It is divided into two independant parts. One part shows a fully automated production of discrete workpieces using two machine tool centres, which are both connected to a pallet store with a linear portal robot. The other part shows a link between CAD, CAP and NC based on CNMA’s communication technology using different minicomputers for CAD and CAP and a 5-axis milling machine.
