Abstract
In the female the lower urinary and genital tracts develop in close proximity, both arising embryologically from the primitive urogenital sinus. The urogenital membrane produces the ectodermal covering of the vulva and external urethral meatus. Animal and human studies have shown that the urethra is oestrogen sensitive, and in the human female oestrogen receptors are present in both the urethra and the bladder. Thus it is logical to suppose that changes in oestrogen levels influence the lower urinary tract as well as the genital tract in women.
