Comparison of Growth of Two Cohorts of Schoolboys in Different Settings

Abstract

The findings so far have demonstrated the growth of day school boys and girls in the same geographical location in and around the city of Leeds. The similarity of the circumstances and setting of these children has been intentional in order to validate the significance of observed differences between the sexes. It has also been possible, however, to conduct a parallel study with cohorts of boys with markedly different social and geographical backgrounds with the purpose of demonstrating how much these factors could have an influence on the pattern of physical development. Unfortunately owing to lack of time and resources it has not been possible to conduct a similar comparison with girls. Aspects of this study have already been reported (Buckler 1989a).
