Neuroblastoma

Abstract

The idea that a radioactive isotope could be used to image or treat pathology arose in the 1940s when radioiodine and radioactive phosphorus became available to clinicians for the first time. The concept of a “magic bullet” was coined by Henry Wagner (Wagner 1975). It was envisaged that a series of radioactive magic bullets would be developed which could be used to diagnose and treat a whole series of diseases. The success of radioiodine therapy is well known but it is only after nearly 50 years that there are signs that this dream might become a reality.
