Gonadal and Sexual Function

Abstract

The effects of age and the menopause on pituitary and gonadal function in women have been discussed in Chap. 1. These affect not only sexual function, but a wide range of other physiological processes including resistance to infection, control of micturition, lipid metabolism, mood and bone formation (Sarles and Bremner 1982). Changes in men are less dramatic and more varied, but nonetheless important. A caveat is that hormonal function is just one of a wide range of factors which influence sexual behaviour in old age. Social attitudes, psychological expectations and physical health are equally if not more important.
