Part of the book series: Clinical Practice in Urology ((PRACTICE UROLOG))

Abstract

Renal cell carcinoma is the most common malignant tumour of the kidney. It is the third most common urological cancer with an incidence of approximately 5–8 in 100 000 males in most Western countries. The incidence rate is higher in Scandinavian countries (10 in 100 000 males) and smaller in Africa, Asia and South America (1–3 in 100 000 males). The male-to-female ratio is about 2:1 and its peak incidence is in the 5th and 6th decades of life (Paganini-Hill et al. 1983). Electron microscopic and immuno-histochemical studies found the proximal tubular cells to be the most likely origin of renal cell carcinoma (Bander 1985). Tumour spread occurs by direct extension or via the venous or lymphatic system.
