Abstract
Rheumatic fever is a systemic illness resulting from a delayed reaction to infection by a Group A haemolytic streptococcus in a susceptible host. The arthritis that it causes is painful but transient and leaves no permanent damage. But it can give rise to a pancarditis whose active phase may be prolonged for weeks or months with serious and lasting sequelae affecting the myocardium and heart valves. Without adequate prophylaxis there may be equally damaging recurrences of carditis after subsequent streptococcal infections.
