Abstract

Classical acute haematogenous osteomyelitis presents with a febrile child with toxicity, marked bone pain and tenderness, a polymorphonuclear leucocytosis and a raised erythrocyte Sedimentation rate (ESR). In these children there usually is little doubt about the diagnosis and the site of infection, and unnecessary investigations should not delay prompt, effective treatment with intravenous antibiotics and possible surgical drainage. Radiographs should always be taken as, although initially normal, they provide a valuable baseline and sometimes reveal some unexpected abnormality.
