Abstract
The October 1979 conference on infant feeding, sponsored jointly by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, which specialises in aid programmes directed to children among the world’s needy populations, brought together several different points of view. The most apparent was the desire of Industry, as expressed in particular by Nestlé and other companies belonging to the International Council of Infant Food Industries (ICIFI), to shift the discussion on infant formula marketing back to the sphere of relevant government authorities, health professionals and Industry experts, where, it was believed, the responsibility for resolution of the problem actually lay.
