Abstract
The previous chapters have outlined evidence which, taken overall, suggests that venous impediment may stimulate increased production of bone, showing as bone sclerosis, increased weight, and in some cases length, or by accelerating the rate of fracture repair. There is some evidence that interference with venous return may also cause articular cartilage sclerosis. As these changes are produced by a vascular perturbation, it is not surprising that many studies have attempted to examine the haemodynamic sequelae produced in bone by vascular obstruction.
