Abstract
Some observations are made about current practices for validating finite element models of safety critical structures and several recent initiatives to promote increased reliability are reviewed (including the SAFESA project). Terminology is identified as a difficulty: The meaning of terms such as verification, calibration and qualification is explored and an attempt is made to distinguish between error and uncertainty and how their consequences should be addressed.
