Abstract

Although the incidence of gastric cancer is declining, it is still one of the leading causes of cancer deaths worldwide. The incidence of proximal tumours is increasing and these are technically more difficult to resect. Eighty per cent of tumours are too advanced at presentation to be operated upon with curative intent. In the UK in 1990, death from gastric cancer constituted 6% of all cancer deaths, accounting for some 10 000 people. This chapter examines the treatments available for the palliation of advanced gastric cancer.
