Abstract
Hepatic malignancies represent a substantial medical problem. Not only is the liver a common site for primary cancers, it is also a common site for growth of a variety of metastatic cancers. Because of its vascularity, and its position at the delta of the portal circulation, growth of metastatic gastrointestinal cancers in the liver is particularly common. For example, 25% of patients presenting with colorectal cancer will be found to have metastases to the liver at the time of diagnosis,1,2 and 50% of patients treated with colonic/rectal resection will have tumour recurrence in the liver within five years.3
