Abstract

The surgical resection of hepatic metastases from primary colorectal cancer remains today the only therapeutic modality able to ensure five-year survival rates of 25-30% and to ultimately cure some of these patients.1,2To achieve a curative resection of hepatic metastases, all the metastatic sites ideally should be resected with a margin of at least 1 cm of healthy parenchyma, while retaining enough liver parenchyma to ensure a normal liver function.3Careful patient selection to achieve complete resection is important. Resection should be performed with minimal blood losses in order to minimize postoperative morbidity and mortality and to minimize the recurrence rates.4,5To achieve these goals, a thorough knowledge of the liver anatomy is essential. The surgeon must be trained to this type of surgery.
