Abstract
This report outlines the major findings of a survey carried out between March and July 1991. The survey, larger scale variants of which were carried out by other CAPIRN members in a number of other machine tool producing countries within Europe (as well as in Japan, the US and the USSR), focuses on 15 UK machine tool manufacturing companies. Results from two larger UK surveys of machine tool production and use (Metalworking Production, 1987; Machine Tool Technologies Association, 1991)) are also included in this report and offer invaluable contextual information and statistics to support the interpretation of the more detailed survey.
