Abstract
Past development of manufacturing can be characterized by three main stages. At the first stage, the holistic work of traditional craftsmen has been horizontally divided into subtasks and specialized activities according to the principles of Smith and Babbage. At the second stage, Taylor’s principles of “scientific management” introduced vertical division of labour separating conception from implementation. At the third stage, this vertical division of labour has been further extended by introducing numerically controlled machine tools, as programming has been made a special task of work planning.
