Abstract

Is the dependability of railways managed and, if so, then how and to what degree? London Underground’s Jubilee Line is taken as an example and examined in the light of the current upgrade and extension project. This shows that substantial management of dependability is being applied to a railway. This application, however, is not without its problems in an industry sector with substantial traditions and is unlikely to be optimal. Comment is made on how some of the pitfalls might be avoided in future projects.
