Conceptual Design of Polymer Composite Assemblies

Abstract

Polymer composites are advanced materials in which a polymer matrix surrounds a fiber reinforcing structure. The matrix can include thermoset or thermoplastic polymers. The fiber types can include glass, carbon or aramid fibers in continuous and sometimes chopped forms. Design is critical to the successful application of polymer composites. The design activity in composites can be viewed along three dimensions: material design, assembly design and process design. These dimensions are not independent and their interactions give rise to critical design issues that substantially impact feasibility and affordability. Rarely is a product made entirely of composites; in most cases the product is an assembly of composite and non-composite segments. The term composite assembly is used to emphasize this hybrid nature.
