Abstract

The classification of B cell leukaemias has traditionally been based on clinical and pathological criteria. Monoclonal antibody technology now allows these neoplasms to be classified according to the differentiation stage of the corresponding normal lymphocyte, although, as discussed previously (see Chap. 15, p. 199), such a classification does not take into account the likelihood that the stem cells of the leukaemias may not be at that stage of differentiation. As the properties and molecular markers of these different stages of B cell maturation continue to be defined with increasing precision, so will the classification of B cell leukaemias continue to evolve.
