Aneurysms and Arterial Dissections

  • Chapter
Book cover Diseases of the Arterial Wall

Abstract

Aneurysms are permanent, irreversible, localized dilatations of arteries. They differ from arterial ectasias which are regular, non-expansive and mostly generalized dilatations of vessels. A true aneurysm is formed by dilatation of the vessel, and its wall is composed of recognizable components of the arterial wall. In contrast, false aneurysms result from rupture of the vessel wall and are in fact organized perivascular haematomas in which no elastic and/or muscle tissue remnants can be identified.
