A Pharmacological Approach to Degenerative Alterations of Arterial Walls

  • Chapter
Book cover Diseases of the Arterial Wall

Abstract

The pharmacological approach to the arterial system in man has received little attention until recently. The lack of investigation of arteries is due in part to the pulsatility of the physiological phenomena which take place on the arterial side of the circulation. Additionally, the study of arteries has been impaired for a long time by the absence of appropriate quantitative methods. Today, two important factors allow us to reevaluate the place of the arterial system in clinical and pharmacological investigations: (a) rapid developments in the field of cardiovascular pharmacology and (b) progress in non-invasive techniques. Hypertension, which produces degenerative changes in the whole circulatory system, represents a good model for investigation of the arteries and their response to pharmacotherapy.
