Aspiration Cytology in the Staging of Urological Cancer

Abstract

Accurate staging of bladder carcinoma is of paramount importance in assessing the prognosis and planning the therapy. Staging procedures must provide information regarding the extent of infiltration of the bladder wall (T status), the involvement of the pelvic and abdominal lymph nodes (N status) and the presence of distant metastases (M). The two staging systems most frequently used are TNM [1] (Table 24.1) and the system proposed by Marshall and Jewett [2] (Table 24.2).
