Abstract

Accurate determination of the exact anatomic extent of the tumor and its reaction is a prerequisite of rational surgical planning for all active and aggressive tumors. A meticulous radiologic examination of the extent of tumor should clarify the following parameters in great detail:

  1. 1.

    For bone tumors:

  2. a)

    intraosseous extent

  3. b)

    cortical breakthrough

  4. c)

    soft tissue component

  5. d)

    joint involvement

  6. 2.

For soft tissue tumors and bone tumors with soft tissue extension:

  7. a)

    definition of involved compartment(s)

  8. b)

    involvement of the neurovascular bundle

  9. c)

involvement of adjacent bone (for soft tissue tumors)

To achieve the answers to the above questions a combination of the diagnostic imaging modalities is often required. In this chapter the possibilities and limitations of the different modalities in this respect will be discussed
