Measurements of Bone Mineral by Photon Absorptiometry

  • Chapter
Book cover Bone Scanning in Clinical Practice

Abstract

The recognition of the socioeconomic impact of osteoporosis in our ageing population, with its associated morbidity and mortality from spinal, hip and radius fractures, has led to an increasing interest in bone mass and its measurement. As a result, several clinically tested methods are now available for diagnosing low bone mass, measuring the rate of bone loss and estimating the risk of fracture at specific skeletal sites.
