Abstract

The variety of therapeutic measures which have been described for the management of interstitial cystitis reflects both the uncertain aetiology of the condition as well as the difficulty in controlling the symptoms of the disorder (Table 8.1). A further problem of management relates to the individual response to therapy. Some patients, realising the chronic nature of the disorder and the limitations of available treatment, will accept that some restriction of their lifestyle will have to be tolerated. Other patients, however, may not be prepared to suffer any untoward frequency or discomfort, thus making the therapeutic problem that much more difficult for the clinician.
