Abstract
An essential prerequisite to the diagnosis of a particular disease is that the condition conforms to clearly defined criteria. Interstitial cystitis is an example of a condition where few specific criteria have been established and the diagnosis often relies upon the experience and personal bias of the physician. Thus a collection of symptoms and signs which would be acceptable as a basis for the diagnosis in one clinic may not be considered appropriate in another. This variability has hampered progress, particularly since the scarcity of these patients emphasises the need to pool data from different centres in order to identify common features and to evaluate differing forms of treatment.
