Abstract

Hunner (1915) first described a rare type of bladder ulcer in a group of eight female patients whose average age was 37 years and whose symptoms included frequency, nocturia, urgency and suprapubic pain for periods up to 17 years. Urine examination was unhelpful but cystoscopy revealed that all had ulcers or smooth white scars with surrounding hyperaemia in the vault of the bladder. Examination of surgically removed specimens demonstrated rather non-specific changes of absent epithelium, chronic granulation tissue and capillaries packed with leucocytes. This condition was given the name ‘submucous ulcer’ of the bladder by Bumpus in 1921.
