Diagnosis and Management of Renal Cysts

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Clinical Practice in Urology ((PRACTICE UROLOG))

Abstract

Cystic lesions are one of the most common abnormalities of the kidney [19, 22, 23, 26]. Although some cystic lesions of the kidney are associated with devastating medical disease and present with severe symptoms, e.g., uremic medullary cystic disease, the majority of renal cystic lesions are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally on intravenous urograms or computed tomograms performed for other reasons [19, 20, 23, 26, 28]. However, an incidence of malignancies of approximately 5.5% in the group of patients discovered to harbor an asymptomatic space-occupying lesion mandates investigations to establish the diagnosis with acceptable accuracy [19, 23, 26].
